Yoga As Support for Fibromyalgia

Yoga is a hybrid of spiritual, mental, and physical practices or philosophies that originated in ancient India. Yoga consists of an unlimited variety of practices that have helped millions for centuries in achieving a balance between body, mind, and spirit. However, for certain groups of people such as people with Fibromyalgia, Yoga can be very difficult to tolerate especially if you do not pay attention to some of its basic principles such as deep breathing. If this is your first time trying out Yoga, you may want to first try a class at a local gym. It's beneficial to note though that the type of class and level of expertise you'll get from a class at a local yoga studio or virtual classes, like the ones offered by us, won't necessarily to be the same level of experience you'll get from a YouTube video.

Yoga poses are focused on the development of strength, flexibility, stamina, balance, health, and calmness. Interestingly, while Yoga poses are generally held for relaxation, they also assist in the reduction of chronic pain because they improve blood circulation, enhance joint mobility and range of motion, provide alternative methods for relieving pain due to poor posture, strengthen muscles and tendons, as well as build endurance. The release of tension and stress in your muscles also helps reduce tension-related pain.

However, many people suffering from Fibromyalgia report different results with different levels of yoga practice postures. For example, while many people find that gentle, supported positions of Yoga help alleviate chronic pain, others may only feel heightened physical sensations such as tingling, heaviness, or numbness in their muscles. Many of these individuals do report an improvement in muscle tone and flexibility after a few months of yoga practice. Also, many people who practice yoga often report a reduction or elimination of sleeping problems. Chronic fibromyalgia patients also commonly note increased energy levels and improved mental clarity. However, different yoga practices may be very helpful for different people suffering from this disease. We encourage you to find a practice that works for you and incorporate it into your daily routine.
